World Environmental Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June at Andhra Loyola college and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment in students.
This year, the theme of WED is **Beat Plastic Pollution**, which aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste on our planet and our health, and to inspire people to take action to reduce their plastic footprint.
Plastic is a versatile and durable material that has many benefits for modern society. However, it also poses a serious threat to our environment and our well-being when it is not properly managed and disposed of. Some facts about plastic pollution are:
- More than 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year worldwide, half of which is designed to be used only once. Of that, less than 10 per cent is recycled. An estimated 19-23 million tonnes end up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. That is approximately the weight of 2,200 Eiffel Towers all together.
- Microplastics – tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter – find their way into food, water and air. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year –and many more if inhalation is considered.
- Discarded or burnt single-use plastic harms human health and biodiversity and pollutes every ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor.
- Some 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into oceans. This may triple by 2040. More than 800 marine and coastal species are affected by this pollution through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers.
Plastic pollution is not only an environmental problem, but also a social and economic one. It affects the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on natural resources for their income and well-being. It also costs governments billions of dollars in waste management and clean-up efforts.
The good news is that there are solutions to this crisis. We can all play a role in beating plastic pollution by making simple changes in our daily habits and choices. Here are some ways we can do that:
- Avoid single-use plastics such as bags, bottles, cups, straws and cutlery. Bring your own reusable alternatives when you go shopping, eating or drinking.
- Choose products that have less or no plastic packaging. Buy in bulk or from local markets when possible.
- Recycle or compost your plastic waste properly. Check with your local authorities or waste collectors on how to do that.
- Support initiatives that promote circular economy, which aims to reduce waste and keep materials in use for as long as possible.
- Educate yourself and others about the impacts of plastic pollution and the benefits of reducing it.
- Join or organize clean-up activities in your community or online.
Together, we can beat plastic pollution and create a healthier and more sustainable future for ourselves and our planet.
Happy World Environmental Day!
