FIELD TRIP TO MANASU FOUNDATION
FIELD TRIP TO MANASU FOUNDATION
Introduction
This report outlines the community service
initiatives and innovative work carried out by the Manasu Foundation, founded
by Venkata Rayudu Garu in 2006. The foundation is dedicated to societal
upliftment through the preservation of literature and community outreach and
mainly focused on Digitization.
Visit Overview
Our visit to the Manasu Foundation was a
memorable experience, beginning with a warm welcome by Rayudu Sir and the
foundation staff. We were greeted at the gate, and a well-organized breakfast
setup including tea and coffee was arranged. The peaceful surroundings featuring
a small pool and a few ducks enhanced the welcoming ambiance.
Inaugural Session
After breakfast, the inaugural session
commenced. We had the opportunity to meet several founders and key speakers
associated with the foundation. They introduced themselves and shared insights
into the foundation's vision and ongoing initiatives.
Following this session, we were divided
into groups and guided through various departments of the organization to gain
a deeper understanding of the operational processes and the work culture at the
foundation.
Lunch and Group Interaction
Lunch was arranged for all participants,
with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options provided. Post-lunch, we
engaged in a group interaction session where we discussed our observations and
offered suggestions for further improvements within the foundation.
Purpose of the Visit
The core objective of the visit was to
explore the foundation’s approach to digitizing printed books, thereby
preserving them for future generations and improving accessibility to knowledge
resources.
The Digital Conversion Process
The digitization process at the Manasu
Foundation follows a well-defined nine-phase workflow, ensuring precision and
quality:
1.
Identification and Cataloging
Books are first categorized based on
attributes like title, author, and origin to streamline the process.
2.
Indexing Stage
Each book is documented thoroughly, noting
details such as page count, missing pages, and annotations. An inventory check
determines whether a digital version already exists.
3.
Spine Modification
For scanning, the book spine is trimmed by
3mm to separate pages. Delicate books are handled manually with extra care to
prevent damage.
4.
Page Verification
Pages are verified for order and
completeness. Details are logged on a slip for reference.
5.
Scanning and Digitization
Pages are scanned using ScannerPro. Larger
books are digitized using a custom-built tool, enhancing efficiency.
6.
Quality Control
Scanned images undergo quality checks,
removal of duplicates, conversion to black and white, and metadata translation
into Telugu.
7.
File Formatting
The processed images are compiled into PDF
format for easy sharing and access.
8.
Rebinding
Books are rebound using thread and hot
glue. A wooden cutting tool is used for spine preparation. The team ensures
safety through proper equipment during this complex step.
9.
Packaging and Archival
Digital files and physical books are packaged and stored. Rebound books are returned to their owners.
Innovation Highlight
A remarkable highlight of the visit was
learning about a custom scanning device developed in-house. While a similar
commercial device costs nearly ₹2 Crores, the foundation's version was built
for just ₹3 Lakhs, using a mobile device connected to a laptop via a custom
application. This innovation demonstrates the foundation's resourcefulness and
technical ingenuity.
Conclusion
The Manasu Foundation exemplifies
dedication to literary preservation and social service. Through their
structured digitization process and inventive solutions, they continue to
uphold their mission of “Giving Back to Society”. Our visit provided valuable
insights into their impactful work and the significant role they play in making
literature accessible for future generations.
